Benalla rider Greg Van Beek matched it with some of Australia’s best riders last weekend at Round 1 of the 2009 Motul Formula Xtreme TT Series at Winton Motor Raceway. Van Beek showed he had what it took to be a contender in the new series after finish 6th overall in the 600 Superstock class on board his Yamaha R6. Van Beek also managed to claim 2nd place in the Victorian Formula Xtreme Cup. After qualifying on Satruday, Van Beek was placed in 11th place, but confident that better times could be found. Some adjustments to the bike and into race one on Saturday afternoon. Van Beek managed to go a whole two seconds quicker than his qualifying time to finish 9th
Sunday morning saw race two, where after two laps the race required a re-start due to a spectacular incident at turn 5. The race had almost run its full distance before Wangaratta rider Troy Winzer slid into the wall at turn 2, causing the race to be stopped one lap before the finish. Van Beek placed an impressive 6th overall. Race three saw a number of the faster FX Lite bikes starting from the back of the grid, which soon caught Van Beek and passed him. Van Beek was a lot more settled during this race and managed to set his personal best time at Winton Motor Raceway, of 1:29.662, which is an impressive three seconds better than his qualifying time from Saturday.
Joining forces with Tampered Motorsport early this month, this was Van Beek’s first race meeting with the team. Tampered Motorsport has been involved with motor racing for a long time, but this being the first step into motorcycle racing. “It is exciting to have Greg on board, he is a good talented rider, and a good fella, we are looking forward to a long relationship between him and the team” Team Manager Adam Ronke said.
In two weeks time Van Beek will also be hitting the road to Queensland Raceway to compete in Round 3 of the Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship. |
